Great Leaders As President's Day approaches, it's appropriate to reflect upon history, examine the beliefs and virtues of God-fearing leaders, and recommit our priorities to what is right - not to that which is convenient or temporal. It is our duty as Americans to preserve our awesome heritage, make similar tough choices as did our forefathers, honor those who serve, and never forget the One who really protects us. Excerpted below are several quotes I hope you will find inspiring . . . Choose Today... On July 2 1776, from his headquarters in New York, General Washington issued this order: The time is now near at hand which must probably determine whether Americans are to be freemen or slaves ; whether they are to have any property they can call their own; whether their houses and farms are to be pillaged and destroyed, and themselves consigned to a state of wretchedness from which no human efforts will deliver them. The fate of unborn millions will depend, under God, on the courage of this army. Our cruel and unrelenting enemy leaves us only the choice of brave resistance, or the most abject submission. We have, therefore to resolve to conquer or die. (Pg. 638 America's God & Country) The Right Attitude "Victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory however long and hard the road may be; for without victory there is no survival." - Winston Churchill Give Thanks to Those Who Serve(d) Washington's Prayer for the United States of America appears on a plaque in St. Paul's Chapel in New York City and at Pohick Church, Fairfax County, Virginia, where Washington was a vestry man form 1762-1784. Almighty God; We make our earnest prayer that Thou wilt Keep the United States in Thy Holy protection; and Thou wilt incline the hearts of the Citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to Government; and entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another and for their fellow Citizens of the United States at large, and particularly their brethren who have served in the Field. And finally that Thou wilt most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with that Characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed Religion, and without a humble imitation of whose example in these things we can never hope to be a happy nation. (pg. 647 America's God & Country) Don't Forget the One Who Really Protects Us On March 11, 1792, from Philadelphia, President George Washington wrote a letter to John Armstrong: I am sure that never was a people, who had more reason to acknowledge a Divine interposition in their affairs, than those of the United States; and I should be pained to believe that they have forgotten that agency, which was so often manifested during our Revolution, or that failed to consider the omnipotence of that God who is alone able to protect them. (pg. 655 America's God & Country) The Choice In 1909, with grave intuition, President (Teddy) Roosevelt, gave this ominous warning: Progress has brought us both unbounded opportunities and unbridled difficulties. Thus, the measure of our civilization will not be that we have done much, but what we have done with that much. I believe that the next half century will determine if we will advance the cause of Christian civilization or revert to the horrors of brutal paganism. The thought of modern industry in the hands of Christian charity is a dream worth dreaming. The thought of industry in the hands of paganism is a nightmare beyond imagining. The choice between the two is upon us. (pg. 540 America's God & Country) Stay the Course!
